It is used on handpieces with a short tail or a cramped rear housing, where a straight connector would foul the cable. The right-angle body uses the same power-and-signal split; the bend is in the housing, not in the cable, so the cable is not forced against its minimum bend radius. It solves a mechanical problem, cable strain and clearance, without changing the electrical interface.
